- גַּנָּבm. (b. h.) thief. Y.Snh.VIII, 26b top גָּנַב בפני עדים גַּ׳וכ׳ if one carries an object off in the sight of witnesses, he is a thief (amenable to the law Ex. 21:37), if in the owners presence, he is a robber. B. Kam.57a since he keeps himself hidden ג׳ הוא he is a thief (not a robber). Ib., a. fr. טוען טענת ג׳ he pleads that a thief had stolen the object in his charge.
